AMERICAN HOSPITAL SHIP.

London, Jan. 4.—The American hospital hip Maine arrived at Las Palmns, Canary Islands, yesterday. She reported all on board well.

THE POISONING TRIAL.

Comfort for Accused in a Doctor's Testimony—Policeman's Damaging Evidence.

New York, Jan. 4.—In the trial of Roland R. Molineux to-day Dr. Henry Boa-man Douglas, in spite'of strenuous protests of Mr. Weeks, was allowed to testify concerning the last iljness of H. C. Burnet. 'He said lit- observed irritation of the mucous membrane of (he mouth and throat in his .patient and that tins ulceration was caused by mercury. Dr. Douglas said that in his opinion, however. Burnet died from weakness of the heart, following diphtheria.

Chas. Hughes a member of the Knickerbocker Athletic Club, testified to the ill-feeling between Cornish and SloJi. neux.

One of the most interesting witnesses of the day was Joseph Farrell, formerly a Newark policeman. He testified that he saw Molineux on December 28, 1S9S. coining from Hnrlilegon's store, the store at which the silver bottle holder which figures in the poison package was sold.

HORSES FOR AFRICA.

Northwest Ranchers Offer Them as Gift to Government's Purchasing Agent.

Regina, Jan. 4.—(Special)—Commissioner Herchmer lias returned from the West,"having purchased horses for the contingent. Jinny of the ranchers offered horses as a gift. Every train now brings horses and men and trooping is proceeding rapidly.

Madrid, Jan. 4.—The Spanish consul at Manila telegraphs to tho foreign office that the stenmer Uranus from Panny, arrived there, having on board the bishop of Vega, 117. priests, live officers and 115 civilians, who have been restored to liberty.

MERCHANTS' BANK OF HALIFAX

Montreal, Jan. 4. — The Merchants' Bank of Halifax has decided to change its name. When the necessary charter is granted by parliament the hank will be known as the Royal Bank of Canada.

LOCAL OPTION.

Kingston, Jan. 4.—Tho electors of Leeds county have adopted the local option by-law by a majority of 75.

TROUBLE WITH THE CHOIR.

Belleville, Jan. l.-Rev. C. J. H. Hut-ton, rector of Christ church, dismissed his congregation on Sunday last because the choir had not complied with his request to turn to (he east when chanting the "Gloria." The outcome of the incident is awaited with interest.
